Start-Up reminds me of the years I was working in a University. During that time, I had a chance to work with various companies and organizations - Nokia, Blackberry, KFC, Microsoft, Accenture, Globe Labs, Smart's Ideaspace, DevCon, Google, etc. - and we basically started and hyped the hackathon events and made them trend within the higher education institutions. There was also a time when I actually joined a hackathon, did the pitch, and the team we formed and the product we presented won. Having those experiences, I know that Start-Up's portrayal of a hackathon, building up a tech business and the controversies that come with it, was pretty accurate.
This series, really, has a lot of substance. It provides lessons about family, friendship, love, pain, sacrifice, and following your dreams.
Start-Up has shown that whether biological or chosen, a family is a family. There is no perfect family and it's impossible to just have good days. There will be difficulties and challenges especially for breadwinners but you just stick it out until things get better.
You have found your tribe if you have friends who will ride or die with you. This was shown a lot in various scenes - when the male lead and a friend had to help out another friend get out of a sticky situation, when they got in at Sandbox, when they realized they were wrong to fight with each other, and a lot more but let's keep this spoiler-free. 😜
Doing what you want and what you love or following your dreams, for me, is probably the main point of this series. It teaches people, not just kids, that you can't let other people decide what you'll do in life. Not even your parents. As long as you're not hurting others, as long as you know you're doing the right things and doing good, you have to be confident and strong enough to follow your dreams. You also have to be wise enough to know that in following your dreams, there will be challenges, pain, and there will be things that you'll have to sacrifice to achieve what you want.
Building a business, especially a tech-related one, is never an easy thing to execute and sustain. It will require a lot of hard work and it will also require a lot of support. All these things are shown in Start-Up and I'm glad a show like this exists because we hardly talk about business in school.
One more thing. Women can definitely lead in the corporate world. Let's keep that in mind. 😝
